  • Types of Mountaineering

5,500 metres and 6,600 metres categorised as Trekking Peaks There are two main styles of mountaineering Expedition style and Alpine style.

    Expedition Style:

Expedition style refers to mountaineering which involves setting up a fixed line of stocked camps on the mountain which can be accessed at one's leisure, as opposed to Alpine style where one carries all of one's food, shelter, equipment etc. as one climbs. Expedition style also incorporates the use of fixed ropes, and climbers (and the porters they frequently employ) will travel up and down the route several times to fix ropes and set up camps, while Alpine style eschews fixed ropes, porters, and camps, and climbers usually only climb the route once in a continuous push. Expedition style was the type of climbing Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay used in the first summiting of Mount Everest.

uses multiple trips between camps to carry supplies up to higher camps group sizes are often larger than alpine style climbs because more supplies are carried between camps fixed lines are often used to minimize the danger involved in continually moving between camps supplemental oxygen is frequently used higher margin of safety in relation to equipment, food, time, and ability to wait out storms at high camps avoidance of being trapped in storms at high altitudes and being forced to descend in treacherous avalanche conditions possible higher exposure to objective hazards such as avalanches or rockfall, due to slower travel times between camps higher capital expenditures longer time scale

    Alpine Style:

Alpine style refers to mountaineering in a self-sufficient manner, thereby carrying all of one's food, shelter, equipment, etc. as one climbs, as opposed to expedition style (or siege style) mountaineering which involves setting up a fixed line of stocked camps on the mountain which can be accessed at one's leisure. Additionally, alpine style means the refusal of fixed ropes, high-altitude porters and the use of supplemental oxygen.

climbers only climb the route once because they do not continually climb up and down between camps with supplies fewer supplies are used on the climb therefore fewer personnel are needed alpine style ascents do not leave the climber exposed to objective hazards as long as an expedition style climb does; however, because of the speed of the ascent relative to an expedition style climb there is less time for acclimatization supplemental oxygen is not used danger of being trapped at high altitude due to storms, potentially being exposed to HAPE or HACE lower capital expenditures shorter time scale

    Seasons:

The best seasons for Mountaineering are Spring and Autumn. Pre Monsoon, Spring Seasons (March, April, May) and Post Monsoon, Autumn Seasons (Sept, Oct, Nov) is great time for ascents as the weather tends to be more stable. However, helicopter operated base camps normally close down at the end of August.

    Experience & Fitness:

Hiking at altitudes higher than 6,000 feet (1,828.8 m) is more difficult than hiking at low altitudes. The decreased oxygen supply at high altitudes causes the body to work less efficiently. Preparing yourself to hike in high altitudes is critical for your safety and performance. The following is a guide on how to Prepare for High Altitude Hikes.

    Permits:

All climbers must register and obtain a climbing permit, no matter the time of year. the designated "peaks" require extra permits, these are generally obtained by the agent/guide who will be arranging your expedition.

    Rescue insurance:

Before the departure check that your insurance covers expedition activities and the conditions. It would be very costly to pay a helicopter rescue at 5000 meters.

    Altitude sickness:

Every year, people die of altitude sickness. All of these deaths are preventable. If you are travelling above 2500m (8000ft), read this information and tell your companions about it - it could save your life.

Altitude sickness (mountain sickness) is an illness that ranges from a mild headache and weariness to a life-threatening build-up of fluid in the lungs or brain at high altitudes. Altitude sickness or mountain sickness is caused by ascending too rapidly, which does not allow the body enough time to adjust to reduced oxygen and changes in air pressure. Symptoms include headaches and vomiting. Altitude sickness can be harmful or fatal.
